Reading and Speaking Lesson Plan: how to reduce the jet lag effect

Hi, teachers

During the reading activities, are your students anxious to look up each new word in the dictionary, too?
I noticed that if I assign them a task before reading, they will focus on tackling it and will be less agitated about the unknown vocabulary. Also, promoting an engaging lead-in will help the reading task flow smoothly.
Another essential factor to a successful reading lesson is choosing a topic that resonates with the students. For this lesson, I’ve selected an article about the jet lag problem and the findings of a recent study on minimizing it, as the target students are frequent travelers for business or vacations.
The lesson plan comprises the following stages:

Reading:

  • lead-in questions
  • pre-teaching vocabulary task
  • reading for gist task
  • reading for detail task

Speaking

The subsidiary aim of this lesson plan is speaking skills. Thus, I have planned two speaking tasks, one for controlled speaking and another for freer speaking. The first consists of three people telling how they experience jet lag. The students should choose and talk about the one that resonates with them. The second speaking task is a situational activity in which the students should imagine they are on a long-haul flight and want to start a conversation with their seatmates. For this, they have to come up with a series of questions and topics to use in this scenario.
If you teach online, I suggest you make a copy of the worksheet per student and use the Kami website/app to open it. Using this tool, students can write, underline, and highlight in the pdf file. Although there is a paid version of the Kami app for this use, the free version is perfect enough.
On the last page of the worksheet, I provided an answer key.
